Shao Yong (邵雍1011-1070)'s Treatise of Supreme World-

Ordering Principles (皇极经世书 Huangji Jingshi Shu) interprets

the cosmonomic properties of reality in a period of 129,600

years based on the square-circle diagram (fang-yuan tu方圆图;

the RHS panel).

The contribution relies on the taxonomic system of the Yi-

Jing’s 64 hexagrams. On the one hand, it presents the

ontological pattern of reality in an elegant progression

in terms of numeral orderings. On the other hand, it

exposes the cosmological base of reality by designating

the Yi-Jing’s stacked hexagrammatic lines (yao爻) in

either ascending (waxing) or descending (waning) vital

-power (qi气) distributions. The system is featured by

the alternating categories of 12 and 30, along with a set

of four periodicities in 129,600 years. These periodicities

include:

 
Periodicity 1: Cycle (yuan元), also called a Great Year (da-

nian大年), a period of 129,600 = 3602 years;

 

Periodicity 2: Epoch (hui会), also called a Great Month (da-yue大月), a period of 10,800 years, that is, 1/12 of a Cycle;

 

Periodicity 3: Revolution (yun运), also called a Great Chinese Day (C-Day) (da-ri大日), with 6 C-Days = 6.0875 days, a period of 360 years, that is, 1/30 of an Epoch; and,

Periodicity 4: Generation (shi世), also called Great Chinese Hour (C-Hour) (da-shichen大时辰), with 1 C-Hour = two hours, a period of 30 years, that is, 1/12 of a Revolution.
